When it comes to Christmas shopping, I’m a big fan of supporting small businesses and designer makers. Even when it comes to getting my Christmas cards and gift wrap.
Last year a great UK campaign caught my eye, which encourages shoppers to support designer makers. Just a Card reminds people that buying a small item such as a card, can make a big difference to small business owners who struggle to be noticed amongst high street chains. Designer Makers will create designs with a great deal of passion and care, so this is a way of showing you value their work and the community they belong to.
So where should you shop to support designer makers? My favourite places to find items are Etsy, Folksy (UK Designers only) and Not On The High Street. I also try and seek out smaller shops that support independent designers. Our city museum in Cambridge has a great gift shop that supports local makers – why not look out for something similar in your town?
Where will you be shopping this Christmas? Don’t forget, you can also make your own gifts! There’s nothing like a handmade food hamper or cosy knitted hat to feel festive.
