Five minutes with designer/maker, Joanne Hawker

Today we’re finding out about the creative world of designer/maker, Joanne Hawker. Joanne designs the most gorgeous cards and accessories available in her online shop.

Hi there, can you tell all of us at Simple Stylish Makes a little bit about yourself?

Hello! I’m Joanne, a designer/maker from Taunton in Somerset. I design and make a whole variety of cards, badges, mirrors and printed gifts. I love yellow, animals, and drawing my own lettering.

When did you start designing/making?

I started making from a very young age. I’ve always been into the arts. My primary school was essentially art school! We made and bound all of our own schoolbooks, did lino printing, made candles and even made our own curtains and tablecloths. Needless to say, going to middle school and being given exercise books felt a little strange. My mum has always encouraged it and even bought me pens that meant I could draw in the bath as a youngster.

What do you love about designing/making?

It definitely has to be the freedom to do whatever I want when I want to do it. I also love that it’s my job. I can have an idea in the morning and have it drawn up, made and photographed by the evening. It’s exciting to see ideas come to life and even more exciting when other people want a part of it. I don’t think it’s something I will ever get bored of.

Can you share any top designing/making tips?

Top tips. That’s a hard one because I think it depends on what you’re doing! I have the tendency to get stressed and sometimes mad if something I’m working on doesn’t go to plan. I find the best thing to do is to close it or put it away, walk away, make a brew or just do something else and come back to it with fresh eyes. I left my new baby scratch cards on my desk top for weeks before it finally clicked and I was able to finish them. You can’t turn creativity on like a tap and sometimes it just can’t be forced.

When you’re not designing/making, what do you like to do?

Hmmm, what do I do when I’m not designing or making. I’m usually thinking about it instead! Or if I get turfed out of the studio, I like to be outdoors, seeing family and friends, or exploring new and interesting places. Cornwall is my absolute favourite place to be. I don’t actually get as much free time as I’d perhaps like but I’m not complaining because it’s something I like to be doing.
