Today we’re finding out about the creative world of Jo Want who designs fun jewellery that cannot fail to put a smile on your face!
Hi there Jo! Can you tell us all a little bit about yourself?
HELLO! I’m Jo *waves* The cheesy grin and happy soul behind Hello Sunshine. I’m 32 years young, about 5’7″ with pinky, blonde, gingery brown hair… at the moment. I’m originally from Nottingham but now live in Cambridge with a lovely bearded boy and my two kitties known as Toby Cat and Princess Pegs. I worked my socks off and am now super proud to do what I love (making jewellery and doodling) for a living and couldn’t do it without the amazing, creative community I’ve met online and real life and the support of my friends and family.
When did you start designing/making?
Since a very young age I have always been creative, whether it was making things I’d seen on Art Attack or illustrating my own stories and drawing pictures for family and friends. I chose to study art throughout school, college and university and after travelling for nearly a year I decided to try and sell some of my work. To my surprise people actually wanted to buy my work and asked me to create things for them – it was the best feeling ever and from there Hello Sunshine started to develop.
What do you love about designing/making?
It might sound cheesy but it really does make my heart happy to be drawing, making or designing something for other people to enjoy. It truly is the BEST feeling in the world when you create something and it makes others happy. Seeing someone wearing a piece of Hello Sunshine jewellery or walking in to a home with a Sunshine portrait hanging up in the hall way never fails to amaze me or make me smile. I feel incredibly grateful for being able to spread happiness with things I create for a living.
Can you share any top designing/making tips?
Oh goodness, top tips… I think my biggest learning has been to trust your gut when it comes to making and designing products you love. I used to be scared of releasing designs that I truly loved because I didn’t think people would get it but some of my best sellers are based on personal true loves (like cats and cheese). Maybe it’s the personality and love that comes through in the designs which makes them popular… or maybe there are just more cat and cheese lovers than I ever imagined!
When you’re not designing/making, what do you like to do?
Apart from drinking tea, eating and cuddling my kitties (I think my Instagram gives that away), I love to be outdoors, whether its running, cycling, or hiking and camping with my bearded other half, I just love a good adventure!
