Five minutes with designer/maker, Charlie Mankin

Today we’re finding out about designer/maker, Charlie Mankin who is the ultimate girl boss, running two online shops!

Hi there, can you tell all of us at Simple Stylish Makes a little bit about yourself?

Hello! I’m Charlie, I spend my days designing and making modern cross stitch patterns and kits for, “Stitchsperation” and sewn and quilted items for my other shop “Sydney Rose Designs“.  I love textiles, bright colours and modern designs, which I like to think comes through in my work. I live in the beautiful Somerset countryside with my husband and our two fat cats, Monster and Munchkin.

When did you start designing/making?

I think I was born doing some kind of crafty pursuit or another! I have been making things for as long as I can remember, whether it was fancy dress costumes or creating crazy characters with egg shells in primary school, screen printing and clothes making in secondary school then silver-smithing, jewellery making, felting, loom knitting and more since then…. you name it, I’ve probably tried it! However, I didn’t start quilting till about 5 years ago and cross-stitch about 4 years ago, they have definitely become my biggest crafty loves in that time!

What do you love about designing/making?

Everything! I love being able to create something from nothing, a skill that I think many people take for granted. I love looking around me and seeing things that I’ve designed and made. I love it even more when other people like my designs enough to pay money for them! It’s always a buzz when someone you don’t know buys something you have created.

Can you share any top designing/making tips?

Can you share some with me?! Ha-ha! I guess, the more you do something the more you can do something. I find that once I start with an idea and roll with it, I get a load more ideas. Don’t just stop because it isn’t perfect the first time or you’ve made a mistake, many awesome things come from mistakes. Take a step back, grab a cuppa and come back to it with fresh eyes but whatever you do, don’t stop!

When you’re not designing/making, what do you like to do?
More designing and making! I have my fingers in so many pies, I’m always designing or making in some capacity or another, which is good because I love it! I also love a bit of retail therapy (even if it’s just window shopping) and am partial to a nice strong cuppa and a piece of gluten free cake and watching the world go by with friends.
