Five minutes with designer / maker, Tom Gyr

I first came across designer/maker,  Tom Gyr on Instagram when I saw his beautiful creations. Tom designs and creates stunning calligraphy holders and metal rulers for fellow makers. He first started creating  when he saw the state of his wife’s (a professional Calligrapher) old plastic nib holder. It inspired him to make a holder that she would love using every day and so ‘Tom’s Studio‘ began. Today I have the great pleasure of finding out a bit more about him.

Hi there, can you tell all of us a little bit about yourself?

Hi I’m Tom, a Dorset based Designer / Maker. I hand make dependably long lasting tools for creatives to produce their best work.

When did you start designing/making?

I’ve always loved designing and making things.  I was lucky to have two creative parents who let me experiment with tools, paints or whatever I could get my hands on.  I went on to study furniture and product design at university which was again brilliant fun to experiment with different materials and equipment.

What do you love about designing/making?

The whole process, from coming up with an idea, designing it in your mind, tailoring it on paper, prototyping and then iterating until you create something you’re happy with.  There’s something magical about turning an idea into something tangible using your hands.

Can you share any top designing/making tips?

Experimentation and patience.  The combination of these two attributes mean that you can create something original without giving up half way when your initial experiment fails miserably.

When you’re not designing/making, what do you like to do?

I’m lucky enough to live in glorious Dorset with my wife and little girl. So when I’m not in my studio, we go off on adventures to the beach and woodland.

Thanks so much, Tom. It’s been a real treat hearing about your creative world!
